According to data released by the National Standardization Management Committee, there are now more than 200,000 domestic production companies, and there are even tens of thousands of products involved. 80% of companies are still using traditional plastic packaging, including many food manufacturers. Most companies lack advanced green packaging technology and environmental awareness, resulting in more and more plastic packaging waste, which has a great impact on the environment.

At present, the State Administration of Market Supervision and Administration and the National Standardization Administration have issued "Green Packaging Evaluation Methods and Guidelines." This standard puts forward the four requirements of low-carbon, energy-saving, environmental protection and safety for green packaging products, and stipulates the evaluation criteria of green packaging. "Green packaging" refers to the premise of meeting the packaging function requirements during the whole life cycle of packaging products. Bottom, packaging that is less harmful to human health and the ecological environment, and consumes less resources and energy. This definition will bring new development opportunities for the food packaging industry, and green packaging will become the main development direction of the food packaging industry in the future.

In addition, in order to combat plastic pollution, the Allen MacArthur Foundation initiated the "New Plastic Economy Global Commitment", which aims to develop green packaging and reduce plastic pollution. Food companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and Danone have taken the lead in signing the letter of commitment. Up to now, more than 350 companies have signed the letter of commitment. The actions of these companies have played a leading role in the food production industry, while also bringing huge business opportunities to the food packaging industry.

To achieve green packaging, the support of green packaging technology is indispensable. From the current point of view, the food packaging industry has the following development trends for green packaging:

   1. Develop plastic blending technology to reduce the amount of plastic used; at the same time, use the edibility and water solubility of some plastics to package food, improve the environmental protection and safety of food packaging, and reduce the generation of packaging waste.

   2. Research and develop new plastics. One of the disadvantages of the existing plastic packaging is that it cannot be reused even if it is recycled. Nowadays, many scientists and related organizations in the world are developing new plastics that can be reused. It is understood that scientists have invented a new type of plastic material-poly (diketone diamine), also known as PDK. The difference between it and the currently used plastic materials is that after recycling, PDK can be reused through a special separation method, which improves the utilization rate and reduces plastic pollution.

   3. Development of biological packaging materials. Biological packaging materials refer to the use of biological technology to use packaging materials related to organisms. It can decompose naturally under the action of microorganisms. It is a very ideal green packaging material, and it is also a popular green packaging material in the world. Since the early 1990s, the use of biological packaging materials has continued to increase, and about 60% of them have been used in the packaging industry. Many foods have also begun to use this material for packaging. And this data is increasing year by year, which fully demonstrates the broad application prospects of biological packaging materials in the food packaging industry.

Whether it is the introduction of the new national standard or the launch of the "New Plastic Economy Global Commitment", they have a common purpose, which is to promote the development of green packaging and resist plastic pollution. Driven by this global environment, the demand for green packaging by food manufacturers will continue to grow in the future, and the food packaging industry will also usher in new development.
